Rubber Track Installation
Follow these steps carefully and your machine manufacturer's service manual. Improper installation can reduce track life and void the warranty.
- Prepare the machinePlace the machine on firm, level ground with the attachment lowered. Retract the track adjuster to its minimum tension by slowly releasing the grease fitting (turn counterclockwise; grease will purge). Keep clear of the valve. The track should hang loose enough to remove.
- Remove the old trackRaise the side of the machine with the boom and blade. Position the drive sprocket so a tooth aligns with the gap in the track. Using a pry bar, work the track off the sprocket teeth and over the idler wheel, then remove it fully.
- Inspect undercarriage componentsBefore installing the new track, inspect all rollers, idler, and sprocket teeth for damage or excessive wear. Replace any worn components; a damaged undercarriage will rapidly destroy a new track.
- Route the new trackLoop the new track around the undercarriage, starting at the idler. Feed it over the top rollers, under the bottom rollers, and around the drive sprocket. Ensure guide lugs are seated correctly in all component grooves.
- Tension the trackPump grease into the track adjuster fitting until proper tension is achieved. With the machine raised, the track should sag 10–15 mm at the midpoint between the idler and front roller, or as your manual specifies. Over-tensioning causes premature wear and sprocket damage.
- Break-in periodOperate the machine for 2 hours at normal work intensity, then re-check track tension; new tracks seat in and may loosen slightly. Re-check again after 8 hours.
Bolt-On Rubber Pad Installation
Rubber pads install directly over the steel track link bolt holes. No special tools needed beyond standard hand tools.
- Clean the steel linksRemove all mud, gravel, and debris from the steel track links and bolt holes. Clean bolt holes with a wire brush. Ensure the mounting surface is flat and free of burrs.
- Align the padPosition the rubber pad over the link, aligning the pad's bolt holes with the track link holes. The tread surface should face outward.
- Insert and hand-tighten boltsInsert the pad bolts through the pad and into the link holes. Hand-tighten all bolts before torquing to ensure even seating.
- Torque to specificationTorque bolts in a cross pattern using a calibrated torque wrench. Do not use an impact gun for final torque.
- Check all padsAfter installing all pads, rotate the track manually and inspect each pad for even contact with the link surface. No gaps should be visible.
- Re-torque after first useAfter the first 4 hours of operation, re-torque all pad bolts to spec. Bolts may relax slightly as the rubber compresses to the link surface.
